The air conditioning and heating system for the Škoda 18T trams is designed for cooling, ventilation, heating and conditioning the air supplied to the passenger compartment and for the driver's cabin in the tram.

This is the second generation of POLL air conditioning units which have a completely new design for the demanding climate operation in the Turkish city of Eskisehir. It makes it possible to increase the heating and cooling capacity. The design and production are already entirely in the hands of POLL. The new concept of heating the driver's cabin with the help of an additional calorifier ensures above-standard temperature comfort. The control of the air-conditioning units has also evolved.

The system consists of four main devices:

  • passenger compartment air conditioning units of the KLM-T2515.ESK01 type
  • driver’s cabin air conditioning units of the KLM-T0507.ESK01 type
  • heating units of the KVA-03 type in four versions
  • cabin heating unit (calorifer) of the KVK-03 type

The interior heating units contain a contactless switch and THEIR own control unit with a CAN line, which enables improved control of thermal comfort in the vehicle. 

The passenger compartment and driver’s cabin air conditioning units are equipped with integrated compact power converters with galvanic isolation and inverters. Therefore, they can be powered directly from the 600 V or 750 V DC traction network. The cooling of the converters is active, using the air flowing through the air conditioning unit. This solution makes it possible to minimize dimensions, save space on the roof of the vehicle, and achieve better weight distribution.

The driver’s cabin air conditioning unit of the KLM-T0507 type is used also in the Škoda 35T tram in Chemnitz, Germany.
